Equity Matters

Acceptance. Appreciation. Advocacy.

Starting with Acceptance, we provide resources, community building and empowerment to reduce effects of inequities for marginalized individuals and future generations.

Community, connection, resources, and services for under-resourced individuals, particularly those who have aged out of the foster care system, domestic violence victims and/or individuals with disabilities.

What We Do

We are here to address inequities through the provision of resources, development of a community, and empowerment.

We envision that the ravages of inequities will be addressed and income and opportunity equality will improve not only for the adults we serve but future generations.

Start Off With Equity

We assist individuals in gaining the tools necessary to be excited about the upcoming birth of their baby and confident about the birthing process and their parenting skills.

These boxes simulate a baby shower, with clothing and accessories such as pacifiers, books, caps, and blankets. A welcoming greeting-You matter, your baby matters, equity matters with no strings attached.

We create a psychologically safe, nurturing environment for young adults to be able to be authentic while being supported and accepted. Groups of peers create a community that provides an ongoing support network. Along with providing educational sessions on topics relevant to parenting, we present team building, advocacy and leadership training experiences that can change dreams into realities.

Love for Literacy is dedicated to providing high quality literature so that every young child will not only gain from being read to, but also see characters who are positive role models that look like them and share similar life experiences. This will begin with a book given in their shower box and continue through their welcome to kindergarten box, in addition to a robust shared library.

Birthday backpacks will be provided each year on their birthday with presents and birthday decorations.

The final box will be a Welcome to Kindergarten box.

Testimonials

OMG! I thought when my case manager told me she was coming over with some baby gifts that she was talking like an outfit or two and some diapers. I never expected it was going to be all that! And the clothes are all so cute and all new! I actually cried. Thank you! Thank you!

Former foster child expecting her first baby in two weeks
I went from having everything to having nothing. I been crying since getting here thinking about having to raise my baby alone and not with a daddy. I never wanted this to happen. Getting those boxes boxes made me smile again. I was amazed at all the cute clothes and I love the matching bibs and blanket. I’m still scared and overwhelmed about the future, but I have picked out her outfit to come home in and thank you for the gift because you don’t even know me at all and still cared.

About Me

The founder, Susan Young, has over thirty years of social service, educational and personal experience in the area of social justice, with particular emphasis on the child welfare, mental health,  disability and multi cultural communities.

She has a graduate degree in Counseling  from the University of Arkansas, is a Partners and Policymaking Graduate from the State of Alabama, has earned a Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion from Cornell University, and is in the final year of a three year program; Change Agent Leadership Laboratory at Hope Springs Institute in Peebles, Ohio.

Her motivation comes from close to the heart: she adopted a child who experiences inequity due to race, income level, mental health and other disabilities, and recognizes the agonizing effects of this inequity while appreciating the fact that all people have worth and should have opportunities to reach their potential.
